So because of the recent VMA incident I decided to write about Miley Cyrus and how I feel about her performance/ recent behavior. There has been a lot of uproar since the VMA’s Sunday, and I can totally see why, but there is so much more to saying she’s dancing like a “slut” and acting irresponsible. This will be a long post, so you are warned!
Now I am totally okay with an artist doing what they want to, Ke$ha and Lady Gaga are two of my favorite artists, but there is a line and there are restrictions as to when and where it should be done. Lady Gaga had a crazy weird and somewhat provocative performance, but it was done with taste. She did show some skin in her last outfit, but she was not singing about doing drugs while doing it nor was she being provocative in her moves. Of course Ke$ha does sing about getting drunk, but she also has music about other things, and she has been known to be this type of “party girl” since her career started. She also presents it in a slightly classy way than Miley did.
Sadly, starting off on Hannah Montana has added an extra expectation of Miley, and I feel bad that she has to live up to that, but when you are a child star you sign up for it. I completely understand if she wants to recreate her reputation and show us she is not Hannah Montana anymore, but she is really doing the extreme to do so. If humping teddy bears and making out with Barbie’s is what Miley wants to do, okay but do it somewhere where millions of children and teenage girls are likely watching. I also don’t think this is really what Miley wants, maybe it is, but I think she just REALLY wants to get the point across she is not that little girl on Disney anymore, and she’s willing to do anything. The thing is, she doesn’t have to act like this to do so, look at Selena Gomez, she’s able to show that she is a women now and be sexy without being trashy about it.
I love that Miley doesn’t give a F what people think, but she needs to remember that she is going to have an influence on girls out there, and it sucks she has the extra pressure because she was on Disney, but it’s the way it is. Other female stars who sing or act provocatively usually have another message, Lady Gaga works to show that everyone is beautiful and helping LGBT rights. Ke$ha is all about being who you are and living outside the box. All Miley is doing is saying no one can judge us so let’s twerk and do drugs? Okay so that 15-year-old girl who hears this and sees her performance decides that doing a line in the bathroom and rubbing up on a guy in public like that is acceptable, so where does she end up? Not famous and bathing in money that’s for sure.
When you are in the public eye you really need to recognize you are going to be some peoples role models, and believe me Miley isn’t the only celebrity out there who needs to change how they act in public, you need to accept that or get out of the business. If you’re doing something in your private life and the paparazzi is being nosey, that’s another matter, but your public performances are something you need to control. Now on the other side, I’ve been seeing a lot of negative, and not productive negativity, things being said about Miley. If you disagree with Miley’s performance you can say it without being rude and distasteful yourself. Posting a photo of her butt and comparing it with an uncooked turkey is not solving a problem or being respectful. I think something that also really upsets me is that Miley is INCREDIBLY talented, she has a beautiful voice and is a wonderful actor. I wish she would just rely on her voice to get hits, not acting crazy.
This all being said I hope the best for Miley, I hope she continues with her I don’t care what you think attitude, but learns when and where to have it. I hope to hear her recording more songs that show off her amazing vocals instead of singing about doing coke.
